What We Planted in March

April 5, 2026

About as long as a cup of coffee

Sheridan does a funny thing in March where the ground freezes every night and thaws every day, which is the worst possible condition for bulbs — they want one or the other, not both. You plant them in October anyway and hope.

I planted a hundred and twenty tulips around the base of the Porch. Pink, because the clearance bin at the nursery had pink. I wanted white, which is a more Victorian choice, but here we are.

Crocuses along the front walk. Thirty. Purple and white, mixed.

In the Garden proper — the fenced side yard — I put in six peonies (three pink, three white), a line of lavender along the south wall, and three clematis vines that are supposed to climb the trellis we haven’t built yet.

The mint is already up. Mint doesn’t care what month it is. Mint just arrives.

First guest weekend is tentatively late May. If the peonies cooperate, we’ll have a small vase on the Table when they walk in. If they don’t cooperate, we’ll have whatever’s come up in their place, because that’s how this works.
