A basket of cards sits in the middle of the Table at Gratitude. We pull one before dinner. Whoever pulled it reads it out loud. The first answer comes from the youngest person in the room, and we go around. We have used this basket on Christmas with three generations and on quiet Tuesdays with two old friends. It works either way. It is also why some of the most important conversations in our family happened over a meal that was not, on its own, particularly remarkable.
We made the basket a thing you can take home. Forty-eight cards. Printed on cotton stock in Sheridan, Wyoming. Hand-tied with Brass twine, sealed with a wax G that was poured one card-pack at a time. Some of the questions are about the past. Some are about the very small present. None of them are about politics.
